Halloween is the one day of the year when you can dress your kids up as little demon children, put fake headstones in your front yard, and use blood as a legitimate decorative accent. Because Halloween is such a short period of time, I like to plan a fun and spooky Halloween photoshoots for my daughters every year so that I can relive the creepy season long after the holiday has passed. What else can I say? I’ll take a picture of my kids dressed as zombies over one of them dressed as Santa Claus any day.
My love of all things creepy, dark, and borderline disturbing is considered an “unnerving quirk” by my husband for the majority of the year. But, every fall, for a little more than a month, it transforms into some completely normal “Halloween spirit,” so I have to soak it all in while I can. Every year, I look forward to brainstorming new Halloween photoshoot ideas because not only do I get some amazing pictures of my kids from these little photo sessions, but I also get to be creative and use my seasonal decor in new and different ways.
My daughters are both too young for me to get too scary with my photoshoots right now, but there are still a lot of great kid-friendly scenes with just the right amount of spook to them. So, if you’re in the same boat as me and looking for some Halloween photoshoot ideas, here are a few to think about this year.
Witches In The Woods
Nothing says autumn and Halloween quite like falling leaves and bare trees. Dress your children in witch costumes and use sunlight, photo magic, or fake fog to transform your nearby trees into their spooky forest.
Zombie Kids
Because it’s all about making your kids look like they’ve risen from the dead, you’ll need more makeup skills than photography. In addition to makeup, dress them in tattered clothes and rub dirt on them to bring the look to life (or dead).
Jack-O-Lantern Faces
This Halloween photoshoot will be more about remembering your kids’ adorable Jack-o-lantern handiwork than it will be about preserving images of them in their costumes. You can also use a variety of backgrounds, such as a pumpkin patch, a wooded area like in this photo, or a worn-down wood fence.
Secret Laboratory Backdrop
Set up a spooky laboratory or lair where your children can concoct their witch’s brews and make Frankenstein friends. Fill clear bottles with water and food coloring, and don’t forget to add a few spooky elements, such as the eyeballs in a jar in this photo.

Dressed Up Feet & Legs
You don’t even need to do any fancy makeup for this type of Halloween photoshoot; simply dress your children from the waist down to create fun images like this. Clowns, superheroes, witches, princesses, and sheet ghosts are just a few costume ideas.
A Trick-Or-Treat Parade
Find the best-decorated house in the neighborhood (or dress up your own) and have your children pose in a line while dressed in their Halloween costumes, as shown in this photo. To really bring the photo to life, including pumpkins, fake headstones, ghosts, or other on-theme props.
A Cornfield Backdrop
You could simply recreate this photo and have a very cute picture of the kids, but it has a fall look rather than a Halloween look. To add some Halloween flair, have the kids dress up in their costumes, hang some bats or ghosts from the corn stalks behind them, and mix in a few Jack-o-lanterns.
A Haunting Dinner
How entertaining is this image? It’s also simple to recreate; simply place a table in front of a window, add a spooky-looking candelabra, cut some bat shapes out of black construction paper and hang them on the window, turn off the lights, and let a cloudy day do the rest. Your kids don’t even have to wear masks if they don’t want to; some dark, gothic-looking outfits will suffice.
Banners & Balloons
Grab a cute Halloween banner or garland, some orange and black balloons, a witch’s hat, and your baby to create a very cute photoshoot. This baby is sitting on a bed, but you could just as easily hang a white sheet and have your babysit on the floor. If you want to spice up the photo, add some purple and green balloons as well as some spiders on the floor or bats hanging from the ceiling.
TP Mischief
To make this photoshoot work, you’ll have to let go and let your kids run wild with the toilet paper (but, they will think you are the coolest grown-up ever for letting them do it). You’ll definitely get some good photos out of it because what kid wouldn’t laugh and smile as they toss toilet paper all over their house?
Haunted House Scene
Make a room in your house look like it belongs in a haunted house. Collect your favorite spooky decor to use as props, and have your children dress up to play a part. Allow your pets to join in on the fun, as shown in this photo.
A Spooky Fireplace
If you have a fireplace, decorate it in all things spooky like in this photo and have your kids sit in front of it (roaring fire optional) reading old, worn-out books, mixing up a witches brew with a cauldron between them, or practicing spells with a magic wand. If you happen to have a rocking chair and a skeleton lying around, use them as props.
Black Backdrop & Balloons
Snoop around your neighborhood to see if you can find any black garage doors to help you recreate this image (if not, a black sheet works just fine). Dress your children in all black and have them hold a bundle of orange, white, and black balloons. Alternatively, take this image as inspiration and try something different with some purple and green balloons or a white outfit of some kind.
Trick-Or-Treat Candy Extravaganza
Set up a scene like this one, complete with a “Happy Halloween” banner, balloons, pumpkins, props, and anything else you can think of to make the space look festive. Then, scatter candy and candy wrappers all over the table and floor, and have your kids sit on the couch in their costumes, looking as if they ate far too much candy. Make it a little more fun by having them actively eat the candy and enjoy every bite.
Creepy Clowns
I’d argue that nothing is more terrifying than a clown, whether it’s meant to be scary or not. As a result, this image is truly terrifying. It’s also a very simple scene to recreate (as long as you have kids who don’t smear the paint all over the place). All you need is a white backdrop, a white tablecloth, candles, pumpkins, and children willing to dress up as little black, white, and red murderers… er, clowns.
