What Makes the Canon EOS 200D Unique?

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

You may have heard a lot about Canon’s new DSLR camera, the Canon EOS 200D. This is the world’s smallest DSLR camera, and it has the fastest auto-focusing system. Some even claim that it is the best camera for vlogging. So, what is it that makes it so unique?

Canon EOS 200D is a redesign of Canon’s EOS 100 D with significant improvements. It, like all Canon APS-C cameras, accepts both EF and EF-S lenses. Regardless of the lens you choose, the effective focal length will be 1.6 times the actual focal length. For example, if you use a 100mm lens with the 200D, the effective focal length on this camera is 160mm.

GUI (Guided User Interface)

This was one of the camera’s features that I really liked. This is a fantastic feature for learning and understanding camera settings, especially for those who are new to photography. Better late than never, right? Canon, thankfully, has implemented the guided User Interface, making it more user-friendly. This will give the user a general idea of the effect of changing certain camera parameters. Along with that, the user will be given some additional shooting tips.

Image Quality

Image resolution on the Canon EOS 200D is 24.2 Megapixels. When compared to its predecessor, the Canon EOS 100D, the dynamic range is vastly improved. When compared to the Canon EOS 100D, the noise performance is also quite impressive, making it usable in low light conditions. It is preferable to shoot in RAW format rather than JPEG in low-light conditions. The noise at high ISO can be removed later in post-processing. I wouldn’t recommend using an ISO higher than 6400 in this model because it becomes very grainy after that.

Video Quality

Canon supports full HD video recording resolutions of 1920 x 1080p at 60/50/30/25/24 frames per second. The user can adjust the exposure to his or her liking. The frame rate of 60 is very useful for shooting slow-motion videos. It lacks 4k capability, which we wouldn’t expect from a Canon camera in this line. Canon has installed a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack on the left side of the body for connecting an external microphone. You can use an external microphone to improve the audio quality of the video. The rotating ON/OFF dial on the top of the camera body has an option to switch to video recording mode. This makes it easy to switch the camera to video recording mode.

If you are expecting to record shake-free videos without any additional support, as Canon has implemented in their higher models such as the Canon EOS 77D and 800D, you will be disappointed to learn that the 5-axis digital stabilization feature has not been included in this model.

A stepper motor in the Canon 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS STM lens aids in the smooth transition of focus while recording videos. Because this motor is silent, the audio in the video is free of noise. Certain lenses produce a sound during video recording, which is recorded in the audio section. This noise is caused by the lens’s motor attempting to focus.

Build

The inside chassis of the Canon EOS 200D is made of aluminum alloy and polycarbonate resin, with glass fiber added for rigidity. It weighs approximately 453 grams (Only Body). It is available in three different colors: black, white, and silver. The most commonly encountered color is black. The camera measures 122.4 x 92.6 x 69.8mm.

If you want to shoot in harsh weather conditions, such as outdoors with a lot of dust or in wet and damp conditions, this is not the camera for you. It does not include any weather sealing. As a result, even if your lens supports weather sealing, it will be ineffective because effective weather sealing fails at the camera side. If you are new to photography, the kit lens that comes with this camera, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens, is a good place to start. It’s a decent wide-angle lens that’s also useful for shooting people and portraits.

Pros

  • It comes with wireless connectivity options which include, Wifi, Bluetooth, and Wireless. So you can easily transfer your photos on the go.
  • Pretty good image quality in this price range.
  • Autofocusing while video recording is good.

Cons

  • It has only 9 AF points for focusing.
  • Difficulty in accessing a few manual controls
