How to Update Firmware on Fujifilm Cameras

If you own a Fuji X-series camera and don’t update the firmware on a regular basis, you may have missed many features that the camera must provide. Firmware is the software that runs the camera and is responsible for an amazing percentage of the camera’s capabilities. Hardware such as processors and sensors are getting all the attention, but without the software to control them, they rarely work. This is true for any manufacturer, but Fujifilm relies heavily on software to create cameras. Before we start updating the firmware, let’s look at three reasons why it is important to keep Fujifilm’s camera firmware up to date.

Update Firmware To Fix Problems

Keep the firmware up to date. B. Phone or computer updates are only part of the basic maintenance. Most electronic devices have some mechanism for updating. Bug fixes are implemented through firmware updates and are essential for the camera to work properly. When the bug fix was first released, both FujiX-H1 and FujiX-T3 had random power outages and shutdown issues. Fuji released a firmware update very quickly to fix the issue, but if you’re using the camera without an upgrade, it can be a very frustrating experience. Over time, Fuji has fixed large and small issues through firmware updates. By taking the time to update, your gear will function properly and reach its full potential.

Update Firmware For New Features

Bug fixes are important, but Fujifilm offers another important (and more exciting!) Reason for updating firmware. It’s a new feature. As a company, Fuji applies the Kaizen method of continuous development. Fuji engineers will develop new features that Fuji will release via firmware updates. New features released via software updates are not uncommon, but the speed and range at which Fuji releases new features are impressive across the range of ISO options. Fuji was released through a firmware update for previous generation cameras. As new features are developed, the hardware is generally released to all cameras that can handle the new features. Fuji is known for announcing new camera specifications and reversing them to include a significant number of new features in previous generation cameras. Firmware update.

Update Firmware For Compatibility With New Hardware

When Fuji releases new hardware such as lenses and teleconverters, the firmware needs to be updated so that the new hardware can work together. If you are running the latest version of the firmware on both your camera and lens, that’s okay. Fuji provides a camera and lens compatibility chart so you can see which firmware version you need to run to ensure compatibility with a particular lens, teleconverter, or another accessory. However, the easiest way to ensure compatibility is to make sure that both the camera and the lens are running the latest version of the firmware.

How To Update Firmware on Fujifilm Cameras

Updating the firmware is actually a very simple process. As explained here, the Fuji website also provides step-by-step guides. It’s also important to note that Fuji has also released a lens firmware update. Lens updates aren’t released as often as camera updates. However, it is important to keep them up to date as lens autofocus updates may be released. Lenses may require firmware updates to work with newly released accessories such as teleconverters.

Check Current Firmware Version For Your Camera (And Lens)

The first step in updating the Fujifilm camera (and lens) firmware is to check the version of the firmware you are currently running. To check the current firmware version, simply hold down the Disp / Back button and turn on the camera. The screen shows the current version of the software for both the camera and the connected lens. You will be asked if you want to update, but it’s still a long way off, so please exit the menu now.

Check For Updates

Once you know the version of the firmware your camera and lens are currently running, you can check the current version on the Fuji website. This table shows the current firmware versions of FujiX series cameras and lenses. If a firmware update is an available Click the Download Firmware button next to the specific camera (or lens) update. The Fuji update is designed to allow you to jump directly to the latest version of the firmware at any time. The current firmware is 4.0, just install the latest version 4.0 and your camera will be up to date.

Charge Camera Battery And Prepare An SD Card

It is important that the camera battery is fully charged before updating the firmware. As with any electronic device, if the battery runs out (or the camera turns off) during the update, you risk damaging your camera. Also, if you have a charged battery, you will need an SD card. The size of the SD card you need depends on the size of the update, but the update is generally quite small (the last one I updated was about 50MB). Ideally, format the memory card in the camera before loading the update to the card (to format the card, go to User Preferences in the camera menu).

Download Update Onto SD Card

If you click the Download Firmware button in step 2, you will see a link to a page with information about the update, a quick review of the update procedure, and a license agreement for the software update. Click I accept the license agreement to start the download. You can download the software directly to the SD card or download it to your computer and then copy it to the card.

Install Firmware Update

At this point, you need a full battery camera and a software update SD card. Insert the SD card into the camera and turn on the camera while holding down the view/back button as you did in step 1. Camera You will be asked whether you want to update the camera or the lens. Select what you want to update and click OK to confirm. The update will start automatically. The size of the update determines how long it takes to install the software. This will not take more than a few minutes. Leave the camera alone during the update. Do not turn off the camera during this process as it can damage the camera.

When the update is complete, the camera will tell you that it’s finished. Pop-out the SD card and enjoy the new features that your camera now has to offer!
